Many change-makers that have come before you have walked the same road and learnt a lot along the way. We’ve compiled some of that experience below to help you create a great campaign that can win. Have a quick read and then scroll down to start your petition.

Who are you petitioning?

Your target needs to be the decision-maker - the person who has the formal power to do, change, stop or start the thing that you are asking for.  They should be a person, not a group or a body.  You should petition the minister in charge of your issue and not the “The NZ Government” for example, or “the CEO”, rather than “the company”.

What are you asking them to do?

Be specific, clear and concrete. You need to spell out exactly what you think is the solution to the problem.  Make it something that can actually happen and that your target has the power to do. It’s good to be ambitious, but it’s also important to be realistic.

Why are you petitioning and why is your issue important?

You need to convince people to sign your petition, so it’s vital to clearly describe the problem, identify the solution and explain how the target has the power to make the change. Let your audience know why signing your petition will achieve the changes that are needed.  You should also provide some essential facts and references to support your argument.

And lastly make it look good!
